HIA Submissions
HIA Policy actively works on behalf of HIA members to highlight the role of the housing industry in delivering homes for all Australians which suit their needs and the important role of the housing industry to Australia’s economy.
HIA prepares submissions to all levels of government – Federal, State and local, on proposed regulations and programs which are relevant to the housing industry.

Permanent Employer Sponsored Visa Review
The Government’s review of permanent employer sponsored visa arrangements is timely and required. Whilst housing construction activity is currently experiencing a cyclical downturn there is still strong underlying demand due to a chronic and systemic undersupply of new homes coupled with continuing population growth and changing demographics.

Submission on reporting of taxable payments for contractors in the building and construction industry

National – Major Cities Unit – National Urban Policy
The Department of Infrastructure and Transport (Major Cities Unit) called for submissions on the development of a National Urban Policy. HIA has responded to the discussion paper – Our Cities – Building a Productive, Sustainable and Liveable Future 2010 addressing the possible role of the Federal government in urban policy and planning and calling for the Government to consider the opportunities to deliver greater oversight and coordination for national planning.

Submission on national wage review
HIA submits that for its 2011-2012 Annual Wage Review, the Minimum Wage panel should consider the industry’s economic performance, the impact of natural disasters, and broader societal issues such as housing affordability and housing.

Submission to Australian Building and Construction Commissioner on sham contracting
HIA does not support sham contracting, where employees, at fact and law, are forced into service contracts or are deliberately mislabelled as contractors. HIA does not accept sham contracting is a problem in residential building.

National – Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) – National Construction Code – Plumbing Provisions Volume 3
HIA responded to the ABCB in relation to the public comment draft of the proposed National Construction Code which will amalgamate all state and territory plumbing regulations under a single national standard, like the BCA.
