BCA 2010 – Changes to Referenced Australian Standards (Nat)
BCA 2010 will see the introduction of new provisions and changes in both Volumes 1 and 2. In particular, changes to the Australian Standards adopted by both volumes will be made. The new / revised Australian Standards will generally apply to building materials and products.

BCA 2010 – 6-star Energy Efficiency (Nat)
A decision on the introduction of 6-star energy efficiency provisions into BCA 2010 was made by the Building Minister’s Forum. The changes will apply to both single dwellings and apartment buildings. Changes will also proceed for the commercial building sector.

Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) Low: assessment procedure (VIC)
The Victorian Government introduced bushfire regulations in March 2009 which designated the whole of the State as bushfire prone and called up the 2009 edition of Australian Standard 3959 - 2009 – Building in bushfire prone areas as the new construction standard.

Ceiling insulation and downlights BCA 2009 (Nat)
BCA 2009 - Volume Two Housing Provisions includes a new provision that has been inserted in Clause 3.12.1.2 (e) relating to ceiling insulation to take account of lighting fixtures including down lights which are now required to be protected under the electrical standards.

Fall prevention through windows: barriers and balustrades (Nat)
BCA Volume Two – Housing Provisions require a balustrade or other barrier where it is possible for a person to fall through an openable window from a floor or the like that is more than 4 metres above the surface beneath.
In BCA 2009, Part 3.9.2 3 Balustrades or other barrier construction has been amended by adding (a) (ii) (c) to specify a height for the balustrade or other barrier at an openable window of 865 mm for consistency with the similar provision in Volume One. Prior to this change, the height of the balustrade or other barrier at these locations was 1 metre.

BCA 2009: Doors in sanitary compartments
The pre-publication draft of the Building Code of Australia (BCA) 2009 Volume 2 (Housing Provisions) will provide clarification regarding the interpretation of Clause 3.8.3.3 for sanitary compartments, meaning that in some cases the requirement to design using a ‘lift-off’ door system may not apply.
