Provision and display of building permit information (Vic)

The Building Commission conducts random audits on building sites from time to time to check compliance with the provisions of the Building Act 1993 and the Building Regulations 2006.

One of the areas the Building Commission have been targeting of late is in relation to provision and display of permit information.

The Building Regulations 2006 have introduced requirements for mandatory use of site signs displaying the registration numbers and contact details for the builder and the building surveyor, as well as access to a copy of the building permit and one set of any approved plans on site.

Specifically it is required to display permit information in a conspicuous position on site accessible to the public generally on site signs at the front of the allotment, and also have approved plans, specifications and documents relating to the work stored on site.

In the matter of provision of permit information on site HIA has argued that it is not always practical to have permit documents stored on site and that these important documents can become misplaced if there is not proper storage facilities.

HIA has made enquiries with the Building Commission and has been assured that the Commission will adopt a practical approach when implementing this building regulation.

For further advice on compliance and what to do if you are audited is available in HIA’s information sheet “Building Commission Audits – Your Rights.”
