Vic – Safe Concrete Pumping
Safe concrete pumping is the responsibility of both the principal contractor and the concrete pumping contractor. This information sheet provides an overview of the basic rules to follow for concrete pumping in housing construction.
Industry Standard
There is an Industry Standard that sets out acceptable safe practices. If you comply with the industry standard you will be complying with the laws.
Note that this information sheet is an outline only and should not be used instead of the Industry Standard. Copies of the Industry standard can be obtained from the Victorian WorkSafe website www.worksafe.vic.gov.au
10 Key Areas to consider for work involving concrete pumping
- The concrete pumping equipment and pipelines should be set up as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Use safe systems of work, and make sure that workers are aware of them.
- Check that concrete pumping equipment is well maintained and mechanically sound, and that all necessary inspections have been completed.
- Consider the safety of members of the public and other workers not involved in the concrete pumping and put control measures in place if required to maintain safety.
- Consider whether a traffic management plan is required.
- Have up-to- date SWMS’s, MSDS’s, manuals, logbooks, and plant risk assessments.
- Make sure you have any WorkSafe registrations required for equipment (e.g. truck mounted placing booms).
- Make sure operators are licensed to operate the plant (high risk work licence).
- Provide instruction to workers involved in concrete pumping. This could mean that you need to consult with workers, or provide information and training where required.
- Make sure appropriate personal protective equipment is provided and used by anyone engaging in concrete pumping tasks.
