Phase out of inefficient incandescent light globes (Nat)

Use of the traditional incandescent light globe has finally dimmed with the phase-out of inefficient lighting meaning this form of lighting is no longer available from stores.

In a bid to reduce energy consumption the phase-out of inefficient lighting was first announced in 2007 by the previous Federal Government.  Commencing with a ban on importation the process was accelerated in July 2009 with a ban on the sale of incandescent light globes from 1 November 2009 announced.

The intention of the phase-out is to reduce energy consumption throughout the country as part of the Government’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gases by 60 per cent by 2050. The banning of this form of lighting is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 800,000 tonnes per year.

The phase-out will mandate the use of more efficient lighting, such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), light emitting diodes (LEDs) and energy efficient halogens.

As well as an importation and sale ban, the Government will implement the phase-out by introducing Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for lighting products which is similar to the Water Efficiency Labelling Standards Scheme for water products introduced in 2006.

Lighting products will have to meet the minimum efficiency standards before they can go on sale in Australia .  

How will this affect the housing industry?

Builders, electricians and other consumers will be unable to purchase inefficient incandescent light globes from 1 November 2009 .

Whilst the common incandescent globe is now unavailable more efficient types of incandescent bulbs, such as halogens are available and the development and refinement of CFL and LED technology will continue.

Some manufacturers have already commenced sale of a more efficient halogen bulb enclosed by the common pear-shaped form, therefore creating a direct replacement for homeowners.  Overtime the least efficient halogens can also be expected to be phased out.

It is important for members to be aware of this phase-out and consider alternative energy efficient lighting options in new homes and renovations, if you are not already doing so.
