Accessibility in Residential Buildings
-
Accessibility to private homes for people with disabilities needs to be addressed through voluntary market-based incentives, improved consumer and industry information, and direct Government assistance to people with disabilities.
- The introduction of mandatory planning or building regulations which regulate accessibility in private dwellings is not appropriate or cost effective to address concerns about accessibility for people with disabilities.
- The actual demand for accessibility features in private dwellings should be assessed through independent research and support the development of voluntary industry programs to meet these needs.
- The residential development industry should be assisted to develop low cost technical solutions to accessibility needs in private dwellings as an option.
- The BCA should only provide minimum effective requirements for publicly accessible areas within multiple occupancy residential buildings and for dwellings within residential buildings specifically designed for aged or disable persons.
