Domestic Garage Door Installations: AS/NZS 4505

The incidence of roller doors being “blown out” of their guides appears to be on the increase. Historically this has been perceived as a problem limited to the tropical high wind areas of Northern Australia .

A wind blown roller door released from its guides may result in damage or personal injury, and be particularly expensive if the family vehicle is housed behind the roller door. The installation of windlock door guides will ensure that the door will remain in place during the most adverse of weather conditions.

A windlock clip is securely fixed to the curtain of the door. The windlock clip keys into the guide section of the garage door ensuring the doors stability, and restricting and flexing through the span of the door.

Australian Standard 4505 - Domestic Garage Doors

Standards Australia has produced a standard for the manufacture of garage doors, AS/NZS 4505 – Domestic Garage Doors.

This standard specifies the requirements for the design, construction, performance and installation of domestic garage doors. This standard also specifies the resultant loads on structures onto which garage doors are mounted and as part of the Performance Requirements for Wind Loads, specifies test pressures for design wind load classifications.

Garage doors complying with the new standard will be labelled with the manufacture’s name and also specify the design wind speed classification for which the door is suitable. It is imperative installation of domestic garage doors is in accordance with the labelled specification.

Enquires should be made as to the likelihood of high wind loads in the area of which a house is to be constructed. This may not be limited to a particular region, but may also be as a result of the buildings location and / or orientation.
