Minimum wage increases from 1 July - NAT

Modern award rates will increase by a flat 3.4% following an order made by Fair Work Australia (FWA) last week.

This equates to an increase of 59c per hour (or an additional $22.56 per week) for HIA members employing a tradesperson under the modern Building and Construction General On-Site Award, modern Joinery & Building Trades Award and modern Timber Industry Award.

HIA had made submissions to FWA, urging that they take into account specific issues currently confronting residential building such as the two speed economy, the down turn in housing starts, the impact of natural disasters and the flat-lining of productivity growth.

The increase is larger than expected and follows on from the $26.00 a week increase awarded last year. It takes effect from 1 July this year.

Calculation of the precise transitional and phasing-in amounts that will apply to the modern award hourly rates of pay are now being undertaken and once finalised will be circulated to members subscribed to HIA’s Award Update Service.
