HIA participates in and influences the decision-making process across a vast range of public policy issues that impact on the Australian building industry.

Recently, HIA has concentrated it efforts on several key policy areas that significantly impacts on the building industry. These main policy areas are: -

  • Red Tape Reduction - The housing industry is suffering from compliance overload, which is having a significant impact on the structure and future of the industry. Red tape and the growing compliance burden are making it harder for our members to stay in the industry, many of whom feel they are working for governments and not for themselves.
  • Housing Affordability - The supply of affordable housing has not kept pace with demand and continues to be a key policy question canvassed by governments at all level.Ironically, while this remains a key policy issue, many of the solutions advocated only serve to further erode affordability.
  • Skills Shortages - Unless reforms are enacted to make training more attractive and accessible, the industry will face a growing shortage of skilled workers.Skills formation and related issues are a major priority in HIA’s policy and advocacy agenda.

HIA Policy Statements - HIA has adopted a number of policy positions on a wide range of issues that affect the building industry in Australia – covering affordable housing, continuing professional development, energy efficiency, land supply & development, planning, safe work, standards, urban growth, & vocational education.
