HIA tackles issues around building quality, change of use and OH&S in the ACT

This week HIA was invited to attend and participate in a forum on building quality by the Minister for Planning.

HIA maintains that the standard of residential building work performed in the ACT is generally of a high quality and that the issues that have been raised specifically around multi-unit development are not widespread, systemic or representative of the housing industry.

However, HIA will continue to be involved in discussions aimed at eliminating poor building practices and better educating industry and consumers on the overall building process.

HIA has also been holding further discussion with ACT Treasury and consultants on the codification of change of use charges. With the final report imminent, HIA continues to advocate for offsets for offsite work and improvements, transitional arrangements and the reduction in values under the schedule that over-estimate the development rights granted as a result of the change of use.

Finally, HIA welcomes the opportunity to input on OH&S issues through the recently established Construction Industry Advisory Group. This group was proposed by HIA 12 months ago and recently met for the first time.
