Moonee Valley’s Kokoda Challenge

Earlier this year HIA members were affected by a series of on-site robberies in the North West of Melbourne. Thanks to the diligence of the Moonee Valley CIU the offender was caught and convicted.

Our contact with the Moonee Valley CIU has shown they are a group of very enthusiastic local police. In August they will depart with a group of young people from the inner Melbourne Area to walk the Kokoda trail.

The project commenced last year and operates with the objective of providing a positive and life changing experience for those involved as well as achieving better relationships with young people in the area - many of whom are disengaged and missing school.

This is just one of the numerous pro-active strategies being implemented in the area which is trying to reduce youth crime rates and improve the relationships between the young people, the police and the wider community.

HIA has produced a workmanship guide intended to help in the “grey areas” where standards are not specified in the contract or are regulated by the government. The HIA Guide to Materials and Workmanship for Residential Building Work includes a set of accepted industry standards. The Guide includes advice to help eliminate problems prior to commencement of construction, through open communication between the builder and the consumer, to ensure that all parties are aware of the expected quality of materials and workmanship.
