New Design and Building Practitioners legislation came into effect in 2021 that imposes new obligations on design and building practitioners, specifically aimed at improving performance.

This resource has been made available to outline what work is captured by the new legislation. It explains that all Class 2 building projects will need to comply with the new requirements. Class 2 building projects include:

  • apartment buildings of any size
  • certain low-rise manor house developments
  • mixed-use developments containing Class 2 parts
  • some walk-up townhouses, terraces or villas with shared under-storey garage or storage
  • some granny flats above or below the main occupancy.

The resource describes what designs and building elements are now regulated, and what requirements apply to the regulated elements. It also explains what Class 2 building work is exempt from the new requirements.
