WELS 3 star transition period end
June 28, 2020
The grandfathering provisions for suppliers of registered 3-star WELS-rated shower heads will expire on 30 June 2020, having been in place since April 2016.
The four (4) year transition period was introduced to accommodate the changes within AS/NZS 6400:2016 Water efficient products – Rating and labelling, from the 2005 edition.
The most recent 2016 standard for flow rates between 4.5L/min and 7.5L/min are now related to 4-star, requiring the affected product(s) to meet additional spray-force and coverage requirements.
Suppliers seeking to market a shower-head product within this flow-rate range will need to demonstrate the 4 star rating spray-force and coverage requirements per the standard; as well as submit a new product registration application.
How has this affected 3-star shower heads?
3 star rated shower heads can still be sold and installed, but their registered flow rates must reflect the new standard for between 7.5L/min and 9.0L/min. Should a product meet this flow-rate range, it can continue to be supplied or sold with a 3 star rating as long the product continues its previously registered status.
Any showers that continue to be registered with a 3-star rating outside of this flow-rate range at 1 July 2020, will need to be labelled ‘not star rated’ if offered for supply or sale.
If a previously registered 3-star shower head is demonstrated to meet the 2016 4 star flow-rate requirement, including spray force and coverage, it will require a different product registration number and need to be labelled as 4 star for supply or sale.
Builders and operators of display or show homes will also need to comply with the new labelling standards.
