HomeBuilder start time extended for SA
November 23, 2020
The South Australian Treasurer, Rob Lucas, has this afternoon confirmed that South Australians seeking to access the federal HomeBuilder grant will now have a blanket 3 months extension of time to commence building work after signing a building contract, based the unforeseen lockdown last week impacting the home building process.
This is a positive step and will assist many builders and clients to navigate the necessary steps following a contract signing with greater certainty that they can access the grant.
HIA called for this approach last week and it is extremely pleasing to see such a rapid response from the Government.
This decision now means that the opportunity to extend the eligibility by 3 months (in addition to the six months) for issues outside of the builders control, such as delays in council and finance approvals is no longer available. To do this would be a federal government decision.
HIA is awaiting further details from the Commissioner of State Taxation on how the arrangements will operate and will inform members when this becomes available.
