Insurance for building surveyors

There is growing concern in several states about the ability for building surveyors and building certifiers to obtain professional indemnity (PI) insurance as required as part of their state government registration requirements.

Governments and the insurance industry are yet to identify a solution and it is likely that each state will require a different approach.

HIA is in discussion with state governments to assist in developing a workable solution.

Given the current problems being reported by building certifiers in obtaining PI insurance and the likelihood of no quick solution, it is recommended that builders confirm with the building certifiers working on current projects that they remain registered with the relevant state authority.

In addition, builders should confirm the renewal date for registration and insurance, for any building certifier they are seeking to engage to reduce the risk that the certifier is potentially unable to complete the oversight of a project over the next 12 months.
