What's it all about?

This training program provides those working within the building and construction industry with the skills and knowledge to set up a small business, improve their new small business or to expand their established business.

Successful completion of this training provides you with the skills and knowledge to:

  • establish the legal and risk management requirements of a small business
  • plan, manage and monitor the business operations and finances
  • manage a small team
  • undertake marketing activities
  • provide competitive quotations
  • and establish valuable networks.

On successful completion you will be issued with the Nationally Recognised qualification:

  • BSB42615 Certificate IV in New Small Business

This training has been grouped into a series of short courses, which provide a progressive and practical learning experience.

The short courses are:

  • Business Planning
  • Managing a Business
  • Marketing a Business
  • Operating a Business

Who would do this training?

A full-time or part-time business owner, business manager or office manager working in a small business in the building and construction industry.

What do I need before I start?

HIA will conduct a pre-enrolment review with you to make sure that this program is suitable for your needs, current skills and experience.

  • Suitable level of English reading, writing and numeracy skills
  • The ability to research, access and interpret complex documents
  • Knowledge of building terminology

Desirable:

  • at least basic computer skills in spreadsheets, search engines and word processing.

How long will it take?

This program could take you 10 months to complete, depending on the selected study method. 

You could expect to take up to 40 weeks to complete this qualification via the distance learning/correspondence model offered by HIA. This training requires considerable self-directed learning, research, project work and assessment tasks for successful completion.

You could expect to take up around 6-9 months to complete this qualification via the classroom model offered by HIA. You will need to commit 18 days of face-to-face learning time for this training. Outside of this allocation of time, you will need to undertake self-directed learning through research, project work and assessment tasks.
