An existing harbourside home, with panoramic views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and city skyline, has been transformed. The layout has been reorganised to create functional spaces united by material and design detail.
The project was named the 2022 HIA Australian Renovation / Addition Project for New South Wales’ Critharis Constructions.
Rich in materiality, the use of dark timbers, natural stone, bronze and leather throughout the home produces a visual contrast and tactile experience.
The five-bedroom home spans three levels, including casual and formal living and dining rooms and kitchen. Adjacent to the home is the refurbished pool, a pool house and sauna.
The judges found the transformation of the facade and level of complexity in the excavation remarkable. Incorporating a new garage, a wine cellar, and a theatre, rumpus and powder room, was an impressive addition to the home.
The home was announced the winner at the 2022 HIA–CSR Australian Housing Awards on 23 April at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.
The HIA Australian Renovation / Addition Project, partnered by COLORBOND steel, is awarded to a project which involves structural building works on an existing individual house or residential building. Often, as in this case, projects include both an extension and a renovation, while conversions of non-residential buildings into homes are also able to contend.
