Residential Interior Design

HIA-CSR ACT and Southern NSW Housing and Kitchen & Bathroom Awards

Winner: Rettke Builders and Sketch Interiors & Design

You can see the passion in this renovation to retain and enhance the "mid-century modern" character of the existing house as soon as you lay your eyes upon it. With a desire to open the interior up to the captivating northern ocean view, obtain better access and flow to the rear garden area and make use every inch of the home, a layout change was required. The internal staircase was relocated to better utilise the precious North area taken up by the existing stairs and the upstairs TV room was redesigned, allowing it to be enclosed via a large pocket wall so it may double as a guest bedroom when required. The lower storey received a full renovation, including a spacious new bathroom, and a laundry/kitchenette incorporated into an unused area of the garage to further meet the client brief of maximising the space. The design included being able to separate the entire lower part of the house to maintain ultimate privacy for the upstairs areas. The entire building was re-clad and insulated, decks replaced or extended, and an impressive feature stone chimney and spiral staircase added to take the mid-century style to the next level. Corbelled blocks were cleverly used for the retaining of the rear yard, creating a stunning level back yard area which leads directly off the upstairs kitchen/living area. The curved Corian benchtop and subtle style of the kitchen joinery allows the perfect flow from the northeast views, through to the southern garden via the classic bi-folding doors. Judges were impressed with this fabulous retro renovation. They commented that the design works well with the clients brief and takes into consideration the location and surrounds of the home.
