Bushfire recovery resources

There are a number of support services available to individuals, families and communities impacted by the recent bushfire crisis. We have compiled the following resources to assist in accessing these services and the support required.

The following information is provided as a “guide only” to assist in returning to areas affected by a natural disaster or emergency to help them return to their communities in a safe, timely and orderly fashion.

Emergency Temporary Accommodation – short term housing support.

Clean-up assistance – for assistance to clean up homes damaged or destroyed by recent fires:

  • Insured home owners – contact your insurance company or the Insurance Council of Australia on 1800 734 621.
  • Uninsured home owners – contact Public Works Advisory on 1800 88 55 39.

Animal Welfare – provision of emergency fodder, stock water and stock assessment.

Commonwealth Government Disaster Recovery Payment – $1,000 per adult and $400 per child for people severely affected by bushfires.

Commonwealth Government Disaster Recovery Allowance – short term income assistance for people severely affected by bushfires.

NSW Government Disaster Relief Grants – financial assistance for eligible individuals who have low income and limited assets.

Primary producer assistance – up to $15,000 recovery grants (33 LGAs only), concessional loans and transport subsidies for eligible primary producers.

Small business assistance – up to $15,000 recovery grants (33 LGAs only), and concessional loans for eligible small businesses.

Potable Water Assistance – replacement of potable water for residents not on town water supply where RFS has taken water or contaminated roofs with fire retardant.

Mental health and wellbeing assistance – 24/7 assistance for individuals.

Farm Gate counsellors – farmers and business owners in bushfire affected areas can access Farm Gate counsellors and peer support workers.

Volunteer Firefighters’ Financial Support – payments for eligible volunteer firefighters who are self-employed or employed by a small or medium business and have lost income.

Sporting club assistance – concessional loans for eligible sporting clubs.

Church and non-profit organisation assistance – up to $15,000 recovery grants (33 LGAs only) concessional loans for eligible churches and non-profit organisations.

Replacing damaged documents (licences, permits, certificates)

  • Service NSW is offering people whose important documents have been damaged due to bushfires free replacement of licences, permits and certificates, including birth, marriage and change of name certificates and NSW Fair Trading permits and licences. Call 13 77 88 or visit website.

Food and clothing

Child care

  • Families and child care providers impacted by bushfires are eligible for assistance from the Australian Government, including child care subsidy payments when a child is absent from a session of care they would normally attend, and discounted fees. Families seeking subsidies should apply through their Centrelink online account and child care providers should contact the Department of Education CCS Help Desk on 1300 667 276.

Pets and livestock

  • RSPCA NSW staff are at evacuation centres across NSW, helping people keep their pets and livestock safe. They are also delivering pet supplies to bushfire emergency relief centres. Check their Facebook page or call on 1300 278 3589 for more information.
  • Animal safe places have been assessed by NSW Agriculture and Animal Services for safety and suitability for people who have no other arrangements in place and need to relocate their animals, including larger animals such as horses, cattle and sheep. Check the list of animal safe places here.

  • The NDIA website provides downloadable accessible and Easy Read Bushfire Information and Support resources and other information regarding access to NDIS in impacted areas.
