Long service leave and portable long service leave
Generally speaking, long service leave is a period of paid leave for employees who have been working for the same business for a period of time. The rules surrounding application are governed by state and territory laws, varying from state to state.
Unique to the building and construction industry, portable long service leave is available to on site construction workers and in some cases, contractors. Eligibility is based on time spent in the industry rather than time with a particular employer. This enables employees to work for many employers and gain their long service leave benefit from the relevant state Portable Long Service Leave Scheme. This creates a number of complexities and obligations for employers and businesses in the residential construction industry.
