Gain the diverse skills and knowledge needed by professional estimators in the low rise residential sector of the building and construction industry. Learn how to interpret plans and specifications and prepare estimators for tender.

On successful completion of this course, you will graduate with a Certificate for the nationally recognised qualification:

  • Certificate IV in Building & Construction (Estimating) - CPC40308

This training program has been grouped into a series of short courses, which provide a progressive and practical learning experience. The short courses are:

  • Interpreting Plans and Specifications
  • Residential Building Codes
  • Building Structures
  • Working with Others
  • Building Contracts
  • Apply Risk Management
  • Estimating and Tendering
  • Preparing Specifications
  • Planning Building Work

Please note that this qualification was superseded on the 26th of November 2020 and replaced by CPC40320 - Certificate IV in Building Project Support. HIA Training will commence enrolments in CPC40320 - Certificate IV in Building Project Support (Estimator) in 2022, however the new course is currently not available.

What do I need before I start?

HIA will conduct a pre-enrolment review with you to make sure that this program is suitable for your career goals, current skills and experience.

  • a competent level of English; reading, writing, interpersonal and communication skills
  • the ability to research, access and interpret complex documents
  • numeracy skills
  • a current Construction Induction Card
  • knowledge of building terminology
  • access to a building site.


  • basic computer skills in spreadsheets, search engines and word processing

All participants will be required to undertake and pass a language, literacy and numeracy assessment before enrolment.

How long will it take?

This qualification could take you between 6-12 months to complete, depending on how it has been scheduled in your region.  You will need to commit to 22 days of face-to-face learning time for this training.

Outside of this allocation of time, you will need to undertake self-directed learning through research and assessments.

What resources will I require?

Access to resources is required for this course and may include various current industry-specific codes and standards.  If you don’t already have access or own these resources, the approximate cost is $960 to purchase them all (correct at time of publishing). HIA Training Services staff can provide you with a list of these resources and their indicative cost.

HIA Training Services has grouped the units of competency into a series of short courses which provide you with a practical and progressive learning experience.  The short courses are listed below, along with the units of competency that are contained within them.

The elective units [E] listed below represent the only approved elective unit options offered by HIA. This is a reduced list which has been taken from the specified electives list contained within the packaging rules for this qualification.
