Course overview

Following the introduction of the engineered stone ban across the country late last year, new rules for working with products containing more than 1% silica came into effect on 1 September 2024.

HIA has developed a 3 hour course that meets these specific requirements, as outlined by state work safe authorities.

QLD & NSW

HIA's course meets their specific regulatory requirements.

SA,WA,TAS & NT

Safe Work and Work Safe regulators have approved the HIA course.

If you're in the ACT you will still need to complete the mandatory silica course:

You will learn:

  • What is Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS)?
  • Which materials contain crystalline silica and how workers can be exposed to RCS
  • Current requirements for working with materials containing silica
  • Information and tools available for working safely with materials that contain silica
  • Air and health monitoring requirements
  • New Codes regarding Silica exposure
  • Workplace Exposure Standards (WES)

On successful completion of this short course, you will be issued with a HIA Statement of Completion.

If you register for a virtual course, you will need to ensure you have access to an electronic device with video and audio capabilities to dial into the virtual session.

Eligibility / Residency Requirements

To apply for CITB funding  the student must be:

  • A resident of South Australia
  • Employed in the construction industry.
  • Hold a valid CITB number at registration
Terms and conditions

Eligibility criteria can be amended at any time at the discretion of CITB.

Responsibility

It is the applicant's responsibility to provide evidence and confirm their eligibility for CITB funding prior to enrolling in a course or program.

Must be one of the below:
  • Australian or New Zealand Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident.
  • A participant who has the right to work and study in Australia on a VISA and has been employed in the Queensland Building and Construction Industry for a period of 6 months or more, and is a Visa holder with relevant permission to work. 
AND must be one of the below:
  • An eligible worker in Queensland, or is
  • An unemployed eligible worker (unemployed for a period not greater than 6 months in Queensland) 
AND must not be:
  • Workers from Industries other than Building and Construction 
  • An employee of an authority 
  • Currently enrolled and participating in a Queensland secondary school program. 
  • A contracted trainer or assessor or existing worker of an RTO
  • Funded by an authority or such other source for delivery of the same training being undertaken as part of the program
  • Participant seeking a verification of competency
  • Funded for more than eight (8) Short Courses under this program (either in Building specific and/or Civil specific) in the same program period;
  • Funded for more than three (3) high risk work (HRW) Units of Competency (excluding Asbestos Units of Competency) in the same program period.

Eligibility/Residency requirements

Must be one of the below:

  • directly employed by residential, commercial or civil construction companies undertaking relevant projects in Western Australia; 
  • self-employed and undertaking on-site construction, installation and/or fabrication work; 
  • undertaking on-site construction, installation or fabrication work via employment through sub-contract and/or labour hire arrangements
Funding obligations
  • Successful course completion
