Welcome to plugged in, a new, regular piece in Housing to help you better understand and use social media. Whether you use Instagram for happy snaps, Twitter to access breaking news from around the globe, Facebook to stay in touch with family and friends or none of them yet, it can be a daunting world to navigate, particularly for a business.

Trends arise then dwindle away in a matter of weeks (sometimes days) and online etiquette seems to vary across platforms.

The only constant on social media may indeed be change, so check in here each issue for the latest insights, trending topics, tips and more.

Plugged In will also be featuring #HIAmember posts – read on to find out how to have your posts featured, and learn how to get your business noticed in the busy digital landscape.

Whether it’s showcasing the results of a fitness regime, a renovation, or a haircut, the before and after comparison offers an inspiring and engaging visual. It works beautifully to show run-down houses transformed with renovations.

Often seen on Instagram and Pinterest, these side-by-side image collages are visually appealing and attention-grabbing. They demonstrate the hard work and talent involved in achieving a quality end result.

Before and after shots have been found to return high levels of engagement from followers, offering them something tangible when they’re doing their research.

To make an impact online, consider the before and after. It’s a quick and easy way to show the world what you do every day and – as long as you’re working – there will never be a shortage of content.

Remember: always take clear photos in good natural, lighting.
