Aztek Constructions has won the 2019 HIA Australian GreenSmart Energy Efficiency award with its Collangi project. The solar passive home optimises northern glazing, clever zoning, extensive insulation and cross-ventilation principles to ensure its homeowners enjoy the advantage of near zero energy costs.
Collangi homestead is situated on the northern side of a hill overlooking a valley. Not only does this position enjoy expansive views of the countryside, it also benefits from the northern winter sun while the hill behind provides protection from southern winds and some shading as the tree plantings grow to maturity.
Beautifully-designed, it is perfectly ventilated to take full advantage of the cool summer breezes and insulated to retain the winter sun thanks to precise orientation in its off-the-grid rural location.
Two stone walls provide excellent thermal mass and at the same time add visual interest, both externally and internally, contrasting with rich-hued timber louvres that shade the southern windows.
The home also uses clever zoning internally to further optimise efficiency and temperature control in high-use areas.
