South Australia's Metricon Homes
was awarded the title of 2020 HIA Australian Townhouse/Villa of the Year for an innovative and refreshingly greenery-rich townhouse during the virtual broadcast of the 2020 HIA–CSR Australian Housing Awards on 29 May.
The project offers a unique response to a modest boundary to boundary site, its beautifully designed layout maximising every square millimetre of available space.
Internal atriums ensure all three bedrooms feature a window and connection to the outdoors, while an open staircase and extended kitchen – which relinquished the popular island bench – contributes to the deceptively generous proportions.
Polished concrete and a dark moody palette contrast against superior timber finishes, with the judges commenting on the excellent workmanship and integration of materials that help to infuse an upmarket style perfect for an executive couple.
The living areas of the home are reminiscent of a cosy, contemporary ski resort thanks to the timber cabinetry and finishes.
Judges also commended the maximised natural light in a boundary to boundary build, attributing it to an innovative use of the block.
The Townhouse/Villa of the Year category, partnered by Holcim Australia, is for an individual residential dwelling within a townhouse/villa development.
