Apprentice Mentoring Program

Apprentice Mentoring Program

HIA’s Apprentice Mentoring Program is an apprentice support hub offering a wide range of services, facilities, tools, advice and assistance to support apprentices during their early and middle apprenticeship years.

The Program is available to apprentices in the building and construction industry under the Industry Specialist Mentoring for Australian Apprentices (ISMAA), which is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training.

Many apprentices face a number of challenges as they journey towards their trade qualification. Typical concerns relate to their progress and the length of their apprenticeship, difficulties with their formal training schedules, and anxiety about their technical knowledge. Other challenges arise through personal concerns, workplace demands, career uncertainties and financial hurdles.

The Program can assist apprentices to navigate these hurdles, and help build self-confidence, inter- personal communication skills and perseverance – qualities needed to achieve their career goals.

What does the Program aim to achieve?

The Program was developed to improve the retention rates of first and second year apprentices, and provide personal motivation and direction to improve the likelihood that they will go on to complete their apprenticeship.
To do this, the program aims to assist apprentices to address, remove or navigate around the barriers and hurdles that they may encounter during their first and second apprenticeship years.

How can the Program help apprentices?

Apprentices will have access to a team of advisors who have expert knowledge on building and construction, apprenticeship training, skills development, career pathways and workplace dynamics.A range of additional services and facilities can be accessed through the Program to help with more personal matters that may impede the apprentice’s progress through their apprenticeship.

Who is able to access the Program?
