Building and planning services

HIA’s experienced Building and planning services team can help you navigate residential building legislation and keep your project on track.

When there’s an issue or a question concerning a project – whether it’s in the design, planning, building or construction stage – it’s important to resolve things sooner rather than later.

HIA’s Building and Planning Services team works across Australia to help members understand rules, regulations and approval processes, and offers them advice concerning technical issues, product defects, disputes and more.

Here are just some of the services that HIA Building and Planning Services can provide to your business:

Obtaining approvals and permits

You need to get a building approval before any building work can start. Because no two houses are the same, that means every job needs to be designed properly in order to obtain building approval.

HIA’s Planning and Building Services team is made up of experienced planning and building professionals who can help you secure residential building approvals and permits.

We can help you:

  • understand the requirements for getting planning and development approvals for new homes, renovations, dual occupancy and townhouse developments, subdivisions and more
  • with questions about building approvals and inspections, local government licences and charges
  • with advice on the approvals needed before building or renovating a home.

Advice on building materials and defects

It’s a challenge to understand the ins and outs of how to use building materials and products to ensure they last the test of time. New products come onto the market all the time and building codes and Standards are constantly changing.

HIA’s Planning and Building Services team can provide the advice you need about building materials, installation, maintenance and how to manage defects.

Technical help with the Australian Building Code and Standards

Building professionals need to understand the requirements of the National Construction Code (NCC) to ensure that the homes they design and build comply with the law.

The NCC refers to over a hundred Australian Standards. It can be expensive to buy up-to-date copies of the Standards and it can be difficult to fully understand their requirements, particularly once amendments are made to them. HIA’s Building and Planning Services team can help you interpret the technical information in the Code and the Standards in way that you can apply them to the needs of your business.

The National Construction Code (NCC – comprising Volumes 1 and 2) is available for purchase from the HIA website:

Trusted planning advice

Planning and building can be time-consuming and complicated, particularly when trying to keep up with the decisions of local councils and governments.

HIA’s Building and Planning Services team can answer members’ questions about:

  • working with and obtaining approvals from councils and state government departments
  • rules on houses, dual occupancies, townhouses and villas, residential apartments and subdivisions.

We can also assist with matters relating to environmental management issues such as:

  • Threatened species
  • Native vegetation
  • Sea level rise
  • Bushfire management
  • Sediment and erosion control and waste management.
