Message from the ACT WorkSafe Commissioner

March 25, 2019

WorkSafe ACT had established a Crane Safety Committee with its first priority being the development of a draft Tower Crane Code of Practice (CoP). WorkSafe ACT are pleased to advise that the draft Tower Crane CoP is currently with the Consultative Committee for final endorsement prior to it being forwarded to the WHS Policy area of Government for approval as a code.

Due to a number of recent serious incidents across the construction industry, I have decided to establish Consultative Committees to develop another three CoP over the next 12 months covering:

  • Concrete booms
  • Pre-cast concrete panels; and
  • Mobile cranes.

The Concrete Boom Consultative Committee's inaugural meeting will be held on 22 March 2019. A draft pre-cast concrete panel CoP is currently being developed based on material available in other jurisdictions. This draft will be ready for review when the Consultative Committee meets for the first time in early May. I expect that the tower crane, concrete booms and pre-cast concrete panels CoPs to be finalised in 2019 and the mobile cranes code in early 2020.

Over the next month, WorkSafe will launch a silica dust project to raise awareness about the dangers of exposure to the dust. This project has been developed to address concerns of an emerging trend of silicosis amongst the manufacturing and construction industries.

The campaign will include a range of activities from providing guidance and information to measuring compliance. Of particular focus will be the safety of workers in the stone benchtop manufacturing and stone cutting businesses. The project will be expanded to other industries and specific processes such as demolitions and look at compliance within related industries such as concrete cutting, tiling and other businesses working with or around stone or concrete products.

Silica dust project scope and supporting guidance material is currently being finalised and will be available on our website in the next couple of weeks. If you have any questions we encourage you to contact your ACT Workplace Adviser, Phillipa Stewart on 02 6285 7302.
