Have your say on NSW Housing Strategy

June 23, 2020

The NSW Government has placed a Housing Strategy Discussion Paper on exhibition until Friday 24 July 2020. The aim of the strategy is to develop a 20-year vision for housing in NSW, implemented through four-yearly action plans, informed by data and monitoring.

The strategy will consider housing need right across the housing continuum from homelessness to social and affordable housing, to housing for seniors or people with a disability, through to private market housing, whether rented, mortgaged or owned. The final Strategy document will aim to unify all NSW housing policy under a single guiding framework.

The purpose of the discussion paper on public exhibition is threefold, as follows:

  • to outline a vision for housing in the State
  • to summarise key trends across all housing sectors; and
  • to introduce themes for discussion.

It is important to note that the discussion paper currently on public exhibition is not the proposed housing strategy but instead a review of current housing issues and investigation of themes that could be considered to develop the strategy.

It is intended that some solutions to housing issues in the State will emerge from the conversations that the discussion paper encourages.

There four themes identified to shape the strategy are:

Theme 1 – Supply – amount, location and timing of supply

Theme 2 – Diversity – housing to match differing needs and preferences

Theme 3 – Affordability – diverse tenures based on income and circumstances

Theme 4 – Resilience – matching housing to community and environmental issues

The full consultation package, which includes the discussion paper and a fact book, can be found here.
