$100m Stimulus Package
December 16, 2019
The NT Government’s $100 million public housing stimulus program has entered its twelfth month and has seen $45 million worth of works awarded so far. Over 3300 requests for quote have been sent out to Northern Territory businesses, with nearly 1300 contracts awarded to date. The first four house construction projects have been awarded in Zuccoli, with another 10 house constructions in Tennant Creek currently being tender assessed. The stimulus program will see up to 70 new dwellings constructed in urban locations across the Territory, as well as continued dwelling refurbishment and upgrades.
HIA met with the stimulus program’s project director on 9 December 2019 for a briefing on the program, and it was interesting to see that nearly a third of the requests for quote are not responded to by industry. This can cause some delays in getting these works out into the sector, with many works packages having to be re-procured. The Department of Local Government, Housing and Community Development has undertaken to work with industry associations like HIA to better understand this non-response rate.
The Department is continuing to publish fortnightly updates including the financial figures for the stimulus program and all contracts awarded. To see these updates please go to dlghcd.nt.gov.au and follow the prompts for the stimulus program.
