NT wins at the 2019 HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards

October 09, 2019

HIA Northern Territory congratulates La Perouse Homes on this fantastic achievement. The tropical renovation project recycled and converted an iconic Darwin house into a barely recognisable family home.  External wall cladding was chosen for its high solar reflectance properties, interspersed with large bays of breeze-inviting louvres and wooden, glass panelled doors.

The flowing, well-ventilated space is fit for the climate, using clever energy management with no excess, while water is pumped, treated and then gravity fed back to the house. The judges commented: ‘this home is an example of very clever energy management’.

The 1950s home reused and repurposed as much of the original structure as possible. The original 1956 staircase was recycled and restored to its former glory before being placed into a new position. Other recycled materials helped to minimise site waste, benefiting the environment throughout the renovation.

In the garden there stands a Tarmarind tree that survived both cyclone Tracy and Marcus. Surrounding the tree was large amounts of grass. Following the renovation, the amount of garden devoted to lawn was reduced to preserve water use. The garden now connects seamlessly with the adjoining park.

The HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards recognise the efforts of members who are environmentally-aware.
