Queensland

Keeping you up-to-date with the latest news, insights and advice across your region.

2024 has kicked off with a bang and the team here at HIA Queensland is busy working for members.

With a new Premier, and changes to the government including a new Housing Minister, we've been working to bring these key representatives up to speed.

We've had a couple of meetings now with the Premier, Steven Miles. A key topic of discussion has been IR costs and productivity, with a focus on getting more high-rise developments moving. I've also been invited by the Premier to be a member of his new industry advisory group, and I have attended the first meeting of this group.

I have also started HIA conversations with new Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon, meeting with her to present a number of key planning, land supply and labour issues that need to be resolved if we are going to build more social houses, meet general demand for new homes, and resolve the current housing crisis.

A state election is looming in October 2024, and we're now working on a key document presenting to all political parties some practical and workable policy initiatives and ideas to better support the much-needed continued growth of the home building industry.

A policy win to start the year has seen government agreeing to amend MFR reporting standards regulation, saving many builders around $5,000 per year at the accountant's office.
