Better apartment design standards - Proposed external amenity standards

August 04, 2019

In 2017, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) introduced the Better Apartments Design Standards. The standards were initially introduced with the aim of seeking to improve the livability and sustainability of apartments across Victoria.

Over the course of this year, DELWP has been working on reviewing and expanding the existing external amenity standards for apartment developments. DELWP has recently released for public consultation the Better Apartments in Neighborhoods Discussion Paper. The Discussion Paper provides an overview of the proposed standards surrounding the five policy review areas relating to green space, high quality building facades, protection from wind impacts, attractive, engaging streets and better managed construction impacts.

Outcomes of this process may result in changes to the existing Better Apartment Design Standards and Apartment Design Guidelines for Victoria. HIA have been working closely with DELWP to assist in the process and will be lodging a formal submission, prior to the end of public consultation on the 27th of September.

If you wish to provide feedback to be considered as part of HIA’s formal submission or would like further information on the review process, please contact Teresa Davis on 03 9280 8230 or via email.
