Environment protection legislative reform
February 21, 2019
The Victorian Government is modernising the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA), including its legislative and regulatory framework.
These reforms are being implemented through two legislative packages; the Environment Protection Act 2017 and the Environmental Protection Amendment Act 2018. The EP Act 2017 has already commenced, and the more significant changes contained in the EP Amendment Act 2018 will take effect from 2020. Under the new framework, existing regulation will no longer function.
The EPA are in the process of commencing the drafting of new regulations to enable the legislation. The EPA are engaging with HIA and Councils prior to a Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) being prepared. The RIS is set to be released for public comment in mid-2019.
