It's State budget time
With the State Government set to release its budget, HIA has been pushing a number of key initiatives to address the slow down in Victorian housing activity.
Much has been made of the changing face of home building in Victoria. From record highs in 2018, the suite of leading indicators for new home building – from vacant land sales, to new home sales, building approvals and finance for new housing, have been unanimously pointing to a material decline in 2019. HIA has put a complete package of initiatives to the Treasurer to address the economic conditions identified, to stimulate home building activity and to introduce better regulatory conditions to allow the industry to perform well this year and into the future. A unique opportunity presents itself for the Victorian Government to take some action to address the forecast slowing in Victorian housing activity prior to any further impacts arising. Implementing a package of initiatives for the benefit of industry, the home buying community and the Victorian economy is considered essential.

Victorian Homeless Fund - Brian O’Donnell House officially opened
HIA has proudly supported the Victorian Homeless Fund (VHF) in opening its latest home. The home was opened by the Hon Richard Wynne, Minister for Planning and Minister for Housing and was developed by the VHF with the generous support of many donors and volunteers. The home has been named in honour of former VHF Committee member, Past Victorian President, HIA Life Member and National Board Member, Brian O’Donnell. It was built by SJD Homes and Simon Dunstan, Managing Director said they were very proud to be involved in this project, supporting families in need and providing a home to those at risk of homelessness. The keys were then handed over to the Women’s Property Initiatives who are providing the home to a family in need.
We warmly congratulate Colleen May , Chair of the VHF, and Directors David Knowles, Jacqui Browning, Rodney Ord, Tony Dennison on the fantastic job they have done to see this project to fruition. Well done to all of you and HIA was so pleased to be a part of the celebrations on the day.
