Public comment on the exposure standard to respirable crystalline silica

April 08, 2019

A review of the Workplace Exposure Standard (WES) for RCS is taking place. The review follows reports of workers developing silicosis from exposure to RCS dust in the engineered stone benchtop industry. Safe Work Australia has released a draft evaluation report for public comment by April 30. The report recommends to lower the WES from its current value of 0.1 mg/m3 down to 0.02 mg/m3. This could capture, not only benchtop manufacture, but also other activities that generate RCS and could prove burdensome by triggering requirements such as health monitoring (i.e. regular medicals) of employees and air monitoring.

HIA will be providing a submission to ensure that the proposed reduction does not unintentionally capture activities and materials where there has not been any evidence of a problem.
