Protecting Melbourne's strategic agricultural land

April 23, 2019

The Victorian Government has committed to protecting some of Victoria’s most productive agricultural land, located within peri-urban and green wedge areas of the State. To achieve this commitment, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has been seeking feedback from the public to assist in defining what is considered to be strategic agricultural land (SAL).

The subsequent phase of the commitment will determine which planning controls are implemented, in order to regulate and protect any land identified as SAL. Only land which is currently zoned within the Farming Zone, Rural Activity Zone, Green Wedge Zone, some Special Use Zones (Cardinia) and the Rural Conservation Zone, are being considered as part of this process.

Consultation for the first stage of the commitment has recently closed, with DELWP to consider all feedback from the public prior to progressing to the next stage of the commitment. DELWP has advised that the Department will be consulting industry, local government and the public to assist in informing which planning controls will be implemented.
