Providing young apprentices with safety guidance

In the construction world, every brick laid, nail hammered, and wall built carries a story. Some tales speak of seasoned professionals, while others narrate the adventures of the young and zealous. It's essential to understand the unique risks apprentices and young workers can face. Without adequate guidance, the wrong decisions can bear grave consequences.

The unique safety needs of young workers

A construction site, with its maze of heavy machinery, tools, and ongoing operations, requires every individual to be on their guard. But for the young and inexperienced, the dangers are amplified.

Did you know that workers aged 15 to 25 have a 75% higher risk of injury? Alarmingly, construction sites are among the prime hotspots where these risks multiply. This elevated risk stems from their unique profile, characterised by:

  • Limited exposure to potential dangers
  • A natural hesitation to voice concerns or ask questions
  • A lack of awareness about the factors influencing their health and safety.

The range of injuries they might sustain includes cuts, lacerations, bruises, and more severe outcomes like fractures. Young construction enthusiasts are prone to injuries resulting from manual handling mistakes, such as lifting heavy objects incorrectly. Falls, given the nature of building sites with their ladders, scaffolds, and floor openings, present another significant danger.

The core of the problem? Inexperience. While enthusiasm and energy are in abundance, what they often lack is the seasoned eye that spots hazards or the hands that have learned, over time, to handle tools safely.

Safety first: A host trainer's responsibility

If you're a host trainer or oversee apprentices, it's more than a duty—it's a responsibility to ensure they're given the right training and resources to protect themselves. It’s not just about adhering to laws, but genuinely investing in their wellbeing.

While introducing them to Work Method Statements or additional training might seem daunting, view it as a crucial investment. It’s a bridge connecting them from their raw, unrefined skills to a place where they can confidently execute tasks and minimise risks.

Your checklist as a host trainer should include:

  • Recognising the specific risks young workers are likely to face
  • Implementing a robust safety management system
  • Ensuring compliance to safeguard the health and wellbeing of apprentices.

Building a safe tomorrow

The construction industry thrives on the fresh perspectives and energies of the young. As we welcome them into this dynamic world, it’s imperative that their safety remains paramount. It's not just about laying foundations for buildings, but ensuring that these young workers have a solid foundation for a long, safe career ahead.

By understanding their unique needs, recognising the challenges they face, and equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge, we're not just building structures, but shaping the future of the construction world—one young worker at a time.
