Continuing Professional Development

Continuing Professional Development

What is Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is any additional learning or activities you have taken to:

  • expand your knowledge
  • maintain up-to-date skills
  • progress in a professional context.

Currently, CPD is required in New South Wales and Tasmania to retain your builder’s registration licence.

This means as part of the licence renewal process, you need to meet your CPD requirements. You must complete the required CPD learning or activities relevant to your licence category to renew your licence.

How many points do I need?

New South Wales

In New South Wales CPD is managed by Fair Trading. Licence and certificate holders must complete 12 points of CPD activity each year to renew their licence or certificate.

If the licence period is for 3 years, then the licensee must show that they have obtained 36 CPD points in the 3 years immediately prior to renewal.

Class 2 Building Practitioners must complete 3 hours of their CPD requirements from Construct NSW and the same course cannot be repeated in consecutive years unless the content has changed.

Tasmania

Other licence categories, including Architect, Civil Designer, Building Designer and Designer Specialising in Building Services, must complete 20 points per year.

Building Surveyors and Engineers must complete 30 CPD points per year.

How can I earn CPD points?

You can earn CPD points with the following activities:

  • Training short courses and workshops
  • Events and trade nights
  • Virtual events and webinars.

In New South Wales you can also earn up to 4 points per year through the following:

  • 1 point per year for every apprentice you employ (maximum 4 points per year). HIA Apprentice can help you
  • CPD points earnt by your business partner or associate can also count towards your CPD points.

In Tasmania you can also earn CPD points per year through the following:

  • 1 point per year for being a member of HIA
  • 1 point per year for reading HIA’s Housing Magazine
  • 1 point per year for reading Building News
