The Building Surveyor

The Building Surveyor

Building surveyors review information from designers, architects, engineers, and other professionals to assess and approve building plans against Australian codes and standards. They also work with the builder during construction. Building surveyors can work in government or as private building surveyors.

If you like problem solving, detail and having real responsibility on projects, building surveying offers a respected, in-demand career in the building industry.

What a building surveyor does

Checks building plans to make sure they follow the rules.

Approves permits so construction can begin.

Visits building sites to check work is being done safely and correctly.

Helps builders and designers understand building requirements.

Identifies problems early and helps fix them before work continues.

Makes sure buildings are safe for people to live or work in.

How to get qualified

Building surveyors must first obtain a tertiary qualification; there are several degrees to choose from. All Australian states and territories also require Building Surveyors to be registered/licensed with the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors (AIBS).

Accreditation requirements vary across the country, so contact your state body in charge of registration to identify the appropriate course. You also need practical experience gained under the supervision of a fully registered Building Surveyor to be qualified for the position.

Meet the building surveyor: Yvette Dix

Yvette Dix works as a Senior Building Surveyor and Associate Director at East Coast Approvals Group, who specialise in issuing building approvals and occupation approvals.

“I love that each day is different and varied,” Yvette says. “You could be on site undertaking an inspection, in the office undertaking compliance reviews, or at a meeting resolving matters with different parties e.g. architect, engineers, developers or Council.”

Yvette enjoys the team she works with and the fact people from all walks of life are part of her day-to-day job. The variety of projects is fantastic. “One day you’re working on a childcare centre, the next a nightclub on Oxford Street,” she laughs. The satisfaction of helping deliver compliant, safe buildings for people to live their lives in is another reason she’s happy in her chosen career.

Yvette fell into the job by accident; entering the industry while studying business at university and working part-time as an administration assistant at a certification firm to pay the bills. She decided to leave the fashion business to enter construction – a huge shift.

“A willingness to learn and confidence are important,” she says. “Know that you have just as much right to be there as anyone else,” she adds. “I have personally found that the industry is fueled by competence first and foremost - if you’re motivated to be good at what you do, then you will be successful.

Yvette's top 4 tips

Be open to absorbing as much information as you can from people in the industry.

Everyone has unique expertise based on their experience. Most are happy to take the time to teach you.

A positive attitude will carry you far.

No matter how others behave - always act professionally, respectfully and politely.

It can be a small industry; you will never regret keeping your cool.

Construction, building codes, and legislation are constantly changing.

Know that you will be constantly learning - be receptive to this (no one knows everything!)
