The talented duo of Light House Architecture & Science and 360 Building Solutions have designed and built a supremely comfortable custom-built home in Canberra, a knockdown rebuild that has made excellent use of the passive solar and cross ventilation potential of its block.
The project impressively attained an 8.4-energy star rating (in a less extreme climate the house design achieves between 9.5 and 10 stars), thanks to the careful calibration of the glazing to floor area ratios, window positions, and eave offsets and projections.
The house, which took out the 2020 HIA Australian GreenSmart Energy Efficiency award, is home to a household of five and they consume less energy than the average one-person household in Canberra.
An 8kW solar PV system and battery, burnished concrete flooring and an airtight membrane, all contribute to the home’s outstanding energy-efficient performance.
The judges commented: Exemplary attention to detail achieved a very comfortable, energy-efficient house in a difficult climate’.
The HIA GreenSmart Energy Efficiency award is presented to the housing project that best incorporates cost-effective energy-efficient design and operational principles.
Light House Architecture & Science and 360 Building Solutions also took home another national category, the HIA Australian GreenSmart Multi Dwelling Development, at the 2020 HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards, a virtual awards event held on 8 September.
