Join a committee

Help transform the industry to work for your business

Have your say and initiate industry change

As a HIA member, your voice matters.

Is there a building code, standard or industry regulation that’s holding you back? Do you have a strong opinion about how the industry works and want things to be better for your business? Joining a HIA committee is your opportunity to be on the frontline of change.

Meet and collaborate with like-minded members, expand your network and make a difference to the industry by joining a HIA committee and taking advantage of the strength we have in numbers.

What is a HIA committee?

HIA committees are collectives made up of HIA members in each region who meet regularly to discuss new government and regulatory requirements for our industry.

We work together within each committee to establish a united front. The positions reached by each committee become the basis of how HIA approaches government and regulators to improve things for our members. These efforts can include pressuring the government to initiate, alter or delay regulations that are affecting your business.

“Being a member of various local committees put me on a pathway to represent the ACT & Southern NSW as president and a member of the National Membership Committee,” Jason Bisa, General Manager of Capital + 1 says. “Now that my term has concluded as president, the HIA keeps giving and I now find myself as chair of the National Planning and Environment Committee. Maybe one day I’ll get a seat on the National Board,” he adds.

Joining my local committee led to becoming President of my region.
Jason Bisa

How do I join?

As a HIA member, you can join the HIA committee in your region based on your expertise and area of industry interest. Wherever you’re located across Australia, there’s an opportunity for your voice to be heard. Get in touch to find out more.

Our committees explore and discuss all elements of the residential building industry. Topics include:

  • Building regulations: codes, standards, safety rules.
  • Planning and environment: streamlining processes and addressing approval delays.
  • Training and professional development: skills shortages, recruiting more tradespeople, upskilling workers.
  • Workplace relations: contracts, disputes and compliance.
  • Membership: benefits, recruiting new members, attracting new sectors, member retention.

Beyond our main regional committees, we also have two specialist national committees to provide our valued members within specific sectors of the industry the chance to have their say:

  • Kitchen and Bathrooms Committee
  • National Manufacturers Council

In future, we will be creating new committees to cater to other specific groups, like the next generation of residential building professionals.

Listening to our members is core to what we do. Our committees are a huge part of us understanding what’s happening for you on the ground, in your business, and on-site.

Minimum tax on discretionary trusts discussion paper

HIA took the following broad position on the Australian Government’s minimum tax on discretionary trusts consultation paper: if Treasury's own analysis concludes these tax measures increase the cost of doing business and require separate policies to offset their effects and offer restructuring relief, it is difficult to justify the objective of implementing this high minimum tax rate on discretionary trusts.

EIE – Standard and model conditions of consent

HIA commented on the Explanation of Intended Effect for Standard and model conditions of consent (the EIE). It is understood the EIE explains the proposed amendments to State Environmental Planning Policy 2021 that will give effect to consistent conditions of consent for residential development across the state.

What HIA takes to government

We develop position (policy) statements from our committee conversations that represent our outlook on regulations, home ownership, compliance, operations and emerging issues.

How it works

Your voice, heard

Committees meet to discuss the real issues on-site and beyond. This is your chance to raise challenges, spot opportunities, and raise your voice.

Our priorities, aligned

Elected committee reps join the Regional Executive Committee (REC), presenting your ideas nationally and electing a Regional President and Vice President.

National Policy Congress

The REC comes together at the National Policy Congress to set priority issues for government and elect the Board of Directors.

Present to government

We make formal submissions on key issues like the Budget, workplace diversity, migration, sustainability, and planning and approval rules.

The ultimate goal of HIA's advocacy is to initiate meaningful change on behalf of our members. We advocate for significant government policy and regulation amendments that benefit you as part of the residential building industry.

HIA National Board of Directors

HIA National Board of Directors is responsible for managing and controlling HIA’s funds and overseeing the management of HIA to ensure its objectives and obligations to members and other stakeholders are met. The National President chairs the National Board of Directors.
