Beaumont Building Design, winner of the 2019 HIA Australian GreenSmart Home, have returned to win another national accolade – this time the 2020 HIA Australian GreenSmart Sustainable Home for its Periwinkle project.
The Victorian building company took out the award during a virtual event for the 2020 HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards on 8 September.
Offering relaxed coastal living within a zero-carbon development, the Periwinkle Project on the Cape Paterson is located in a sustainable green field housing project, with access to communal food gardens, revegetated parklands and beaches on Victoria’s southern coastline.
The home achieved an 8.3-star energy rating with its compact, lightweight and low-maintenance passive solar design.
Internally, the home is zoned to optimise occupant privacy and natural temperature regulation, which is enhanced by a north-facing orientation and strategically placed double-glazed windows.
The material palette balances environmental impact with affordability and aesthetics, with products ethically and locally sourced. Other sustainability features of the Periwinkle include: recycled glass insulation, ethically-sourced timber, a 4.5kW solar PV system, low-VOC paints, recycled crushed rock driveway, a green switch to shutdown non-essential power within the house upon exit, and a 10,000-litre water tank.
The HIA Australian GreenSmart Sustainable Home category is judged on water, energy and resource efficiency and management, innovation and liveability.
