Joint entrant: Edward Robert Builders
This elegant and understated home was once one of Canberra’s classic rectangular government houses. The original, dysfunctional 1960s floor plan was reconfigured and extended to create a beautiful and practical four bedroom, two bathroom and two living-space home with a total floor area of just 145 square metres.
Using solar passive principles and thermal performance modelling, the energy efficiency rating has been raised from 3 stars to 7.7 star NatHERS rating. The super comfortable, energy efficient family home is now all-electric with a 10.4 kWh PV system.
Using more than 80% less energy than the average Canberra family home, and generating much more energy than it uses, Blackburn House treads very lightly. This project demonstrates what is possible with many tired, uncomfortable and dysfunctional homes across the country.
