Your next job might ask something different of you.

Maybe it's using a new construction method, or building a home for improved occupant health. Maybe your clients want to incorporate new technology into their home or a non-traditional building material.

If you're interested in what the homes of the future will look like, and what ideas you should get ahead on before they become standard practice, then the 2026 HIA Future Homes Forum is for you.

This is a day built for builders thinking ahead . You’ll hear from experts and practitioners working across sustainability, new and non-traditional materials, healthy homes, modern methods of construction, and practical innovation on site.

Winners of the 2026 HIA Australian Greensmart Awards will also be announced on the day, making this an event not to be missed.

Speakers

Keynote presentation:

Frank Burridge, MAIN&FRANK

Renowned architect Frank Burridge designs buildings that regenerate their sites: schools, eco-tourism and homes that produce more than they consume and leave ecosystems better off.
Frank is part of the team developing the world's most resilient prefab construction system, GreenhouseByJoost, and is currently collaborating with Joost Bakker on an innovative off-grid home near Byron Bay.

Respiratory health benefits of passive homes

Merylese Mercieca, Blue Eco Homes

Most Australians spend around 90 per cent of their time indoors, yet the quality of the air inside homes remains largely overlooked. Meanwhile, there is growing evidence linking poor ventilation, excess moisture and airborne pollutants to asthma, fatigue, poor sleep, reduced cognitive performance and increased disease transmission.
As both a respiratory nurse and a sustainable home builder, Merylese Mercieca of Blue Eco Homes is uniquely qualified in this space. Her presentation will examine how passive house construction in particular can deliver improved respiratory health outcomes for occupants.

New and innovative building materials

Jesse Glascott, G-LUX Builders

Jesse Glascott is passionate about sustainable construction and healthier living environments. Through his own company G-LUX Builders, and as a founder of the Sustainable Builders Alliance, he has hands-on experience with a wide range of new and innovative building materials.
In this presentation, Jesse will share his experience using materials that are already on the market including reclaimed timber, insulation made from recycled denim, silica-free alternatives to fibre cement and boards composed of recycled food packaging.

Managing moisture without compromising energy efficiency

Roberto Petruzzi, HIP V. HYPE

As energy efficiency requirements tighten and homes become increasingly airtight, managing moisture and condensation has never been more critical.
Roberto Petruzzi, Technical Director of Better Buildings (ESD) at HIP V. HYPE, unpacks the condensation challenge and offers practical, buildable solutions that balance health, efficiency, and comfort.

Modern methods of constructions: practical observations from Japan and Australia

Nina Carrington & Zoe Weissel, Todd Devine Homes

Japan has long been recognised as a leader in modular and prefabricated housing, with modern methods of construction playing a significant role in the way homes are designed, built and delivered.
Nina Carrington and Zoe Weissel from Todd Devine Homes will share insights from a recent modern methods of construction study tour to Japan, alongside Todd Devine Homes’ experience delivering prefabricated and modular housing in Victoria.
The session will explore practical observations from Japan, what may be relevant in the Australian context, and the opportunities for modular construction to support the future of residential building.

Sustainability at scale

David Mahony, HIP V. HYPE

Medium density residential development has a central role in meeting Australia's housing targets and the decisions builders make today will define how those homes perform for decades.
David Mahony, Director and Head of Better Buildings at HIP V. HYPE, brings a unique perspective:  HV.H is both a sustainability consultancy and a residential developer.  In this session, David will share findings from HV.H's own post-occupancy research at Ferrars & York, a carbon neutral apartment building in South Melbourne, exploring how those lessons have directly shaped their next project and their broader advice to the industry.

What will the homes of 2036 look like?

Clipsal

Generational shifts are having a major influence on the next wave of ‘dream home’ designs, and it’s clear that client expectations are changing around energy and technology.
Clipsal has recently concluded a comprehensive research program on the evolving expectations of Australian homeowners. The Clipsal team will be sharing insights from this research on how economic pressures, lifestyle shifts, electrification and emerging technologies are redefining the modern home, and what consumers expect from the homes of the future.
