The ACT Government has released a consultation paper exploring the extension of occupational licensing to additional construction trades. This represents a significant policy development and could have important implications for businesses, and tradespeople across the Territory.

The consultation proposes introducing licensing requirements for several trades including carpentry, concreting, brick and block laying, waterproofing, roof plumbing and fire protection practitioners.

The paper outlines possible approaches to licensing, including:

  • trades that are to be included in the scheme and how their scope of work would be defined
  • eligibility and entry pathways for licences, including recognition of experience and qualifications
  • transitional arrangements for existing workers
  • potential requirements such as continuing professional development, codes of practice and professional indemnity insurance
  • and the likely costs associated with licensing and how the scheme would be administered.

HIA would like to invite you to attend our upcoming webinar where we’ll hear from members of the team at City and Environment Directorate developing the trade licencing scheme. It will be a great opportunity to gain an understanding of the proposed scheme, as well as to provide your views directly.
