Building Code of Australia (BCA) & Australian Standards

All building work must comply with the requirements of the Building Code of Australia (BCA).

The Building Code of Australia (BCA) is contained within the National Construction Code (NCC) and provides the minimum necessary requirements for safety, health, amenity and sustainability in the design and construction of new buildings (and new building work in existing buildings) throughout Australia.

The Housing Industry Association reproduces the Building Code of Australia (Volumes 1 and 2 of the NCC) under licence from the Australian Building Codes Board.

Volume 1 pertains to Commercial Buildings (Class 2-9 Buildings) and Volume 2 pertains to Residential Buildings (Class 1 and 10 Buildings).

Understanding Building Code of Australia (BCA) & Australian Standards

All building work must comply with the requirements of the Building Code of Australia (BCA). The Building Code of Australia (BCA) Volume 1 and 2 are part of the National Construction Code series published by the Australian Building Codes Board.

National Construction Code changes

The National Construction Code (NCC) has moved to a three year amendment cycle which resulted in an unprecedented level of changes that affect the residential building industry.

From March 2019, HIA partnered with James Hardie and Independent Hardware Group to hold nationwide seminars in preparation for the key changes that came into effect on 1 May 2019.

Check out the videos taken from a few of the sessions held across the various regions. The videos show some of the key changes to the National Construction Code (NCC) Vol 1 and 2 as well as changes to the Australian Standards.

Regular changes

The Building Code of Australia (BCA) changes each year, so it can take time to keep up to date with the requirements that apply to new homes and renovations. The Building Code of Australia (BCA) also makes reference to several Australian Standards and these also change from time to time.
