Italian artist, architect and High Renaissance poet, Michelangelo, was quoted at the age of 87 as saying ‘Ancora imparo’, which translates to ‘I am still learning’. He understood that even experts in their chosen fields can always learn something new.
Continuing your professional development (PD)throughout your career has many benefits, from increasing your knowledge and industry reputation to growing your business opportunities. Studies have also shown that continuous learning can improve our health and wellbeing.
This is why HIA has decided to expand its training offering and specifically launch a professional development program that will serve as a one-stop-shop for members to access relevant industry knowledge when they need or want to. According to Rachael Oakley, HIA’s National Professional Development Manager, the new content on offer is both affordable and accessible.
‘What we have tried to do is use a variety of delivery options, so that as many people as possible can get up to date with any regulatory and technical changes,’ she says. ‘There will be courses offered live, virtually, via Zoom, or online learning with interactive components that can be self-paced. We’ll also continue to offer face-to-face training for our popular topics.’
Rachael adds the courses are a great way for members and other interested professionals to earn CPD points too, which are compulsory in some states. For members, CPD point/s will be automatically allocated to their My HIA CPD Online Diary for convenience.
With the National Construction Code (NCC) 2022 changes coming into effect from 1 May 2023, Simon Croft, HIA Executive Director – Building Policy & Services, says HIA has been busy developing course material for the residential building industry.
‘We know that our immediate training priority will be NCC 2022, and we have been working with the professional development team on key areas, broken down so we’re not just explaining what the new rules are but more specifically what the changes mean to builders on a practical level,’ he explains.
The new NCC virtual topics will begin to be rolled out in February. ‘We will provide training based on livable housing, Volume Two housing provisions, and waterproofing changes to start with,’ Simon adds.
Sessions are run virtually for approximately 2-3 hours in duration, scheduled on a monthly basis across varying time zones. Participants will also receive additional course materials and fact sheets where applicable.
HIA’s Learning on Demand professional development programs are due for launch in March and cover a wide range of relevant industry-specific topics in addition to the NCC training options.
‘We are really excited as the products provide participants with a variety of self-directed, online courses, enabling them to access content anywhere, at any time and on any device,’ Rachael explains. ‘For busy builders, having easy, accessible training is a must.’
These tailored courses are designed to provide participants with flexible learning options, while interactive learning components ensure what is learnt is reinforced along the way. The offerings will cover five key categories, including: compliance and legal; business management; technical; workplace health and safety; and sustainability.
‘With the recent creation of the HIA PD team, we also have a series of new topics currently in development, these are based on industry needs and priorities,’ Rachael adds. ‘The key is to ensure HIA provides information on changes ahead of time – that way risk is minimised and opportunities are maximised.’
Resources can be downloaded following the completion of each topic, where applicable, to have on hand for a future time or implement into your business practices.
