When Ian Hazan speaks about the future of residential building, there’s no corporate spin – just straight talk. Recently appointed as HIA’s new National President, Ian steps into the role with decades of practical experience and a deep understanding of the difficulties builders face today.
'It’s a challenging time for our industry,' says Ian, who has been involved with HIA for more than 20 years, serving on both regional and national committees. 'It’s also a time where leadership, advocacy and support matter more than ever. That’s what HIA is here to deliver.'
Ian’s pathway into the industry began with a Bachelor of Science and Engineering at Monash University, laying the foundation for a career built on both technical rigour and practical problem-solving. He entered the construction industry 23 years ago, gaining valuable experience at Krongold Constructions and Metricon Homes, where he developed strong project management capabilities and broader business management skills.
In 2005, he founded i2 Homes, a boutique residential building firm in Victoria. As a hands-on builder, Ian thrives on the complexity of custom construction, applying years of knowledge and a sharp eye for detail to deliver standout results. ''Boutique projects test your thinking, and that’s where experience and problem-solving really matter,' says Ian.
That experience now comes into play on a national stage. 'My new job is to represent builders of every size, in every part of the country,' says Ian, who recently took over the National President role from Debbie Johnson. 'What unites us is the commitment to building quality homes and running sustainable businesses. HIA exists to support both.'
That message couldn’t be more timely. Aussie builders are facing a tough landscape – rising material costs, persistent labour shortages, shifting regulations, and broader economic uncertainty. 'HIA needs to be more than a voice; we need to be a force for practical change,' he says.
'That means pushing for streamlined planning systems, fighting for realistic energy efficiency targets, and making sure governments understand how policies land on the ground. It also means supplying training and support that helps members stay resilient and grow.'
As the industry continues to shift towards greater sustainability, digital systems and modern construction methods, Ian believes HIA must ensure that no member is left behind. He also sees workforce development as a critical focus. Recruiting and retaining skilled trades is an ongoing challenge and one that HIA is actively addressing.
'Workforce is one of our biggest issues. We need to get smarter about attracting talent in our industry,' he says. 'That includes engaging schools and building pathways. We want to ensure that being a future construction specialist is seen as a respected and rewarding career.'
As National President, Ian will represent HIA members by advising the government, speaking to the media, shaping policy and steering the long-term direction of the association. Ian’s message to members is clear: 'You’re not on your own. If you’re doing the hard work of building homes and running a business, HIA is backing you every step of the way.’ Stepping in
HIA also welcomes David Morris as our new National Vice President. A Director at leading Tasmanian law firm Simmons Wolfhagen, he brings deep expertise in residential sector advocacy and local government planning approvals.
Before joining HIA’s National Board of Directors in 2021, he contributed extensively at both regional and national levels on HIA’s Industrial Relations and Legal Committee, helping shape policy and support builders across Australia.
