In the heart of Tasmania, a quiet revolution in homebuilding began with a simple conversation. It was late 2021 when two visionaries – one a talented builder, the other a business icon – sat down with a shared belief: that building homes in Tasmania could be done better.
That conversation between Scott Wilson and Josef Chromy AO would go on to form the foundation of JOSCON Tasmania, a construction start-up now redefining what it means to deliver quality, trust and service in the residential building space.
Scott Wilson, CEO and Director of JOSCON Tasmania, brought years of on-the-ground experience and a reputation for business excellence. Czechoslovakia-born Josef, known for building some of Tasmania’s most successful ventures in wine, hospitality, and land development, brought vision, backing and a deep love for his adopted home. Together, they launched JOSCON Tasmania with one mission: to make a positive impact on the lives of everyone they work with – clients, trades, suppliers and the community.
‘Our target market is focusing on the niche between traditional project home builders and custom home builder, appealing to those prospective clients who want the best but don't have either the budget or the time to be able to undertake a custom home,’ says Scott.
This approach has already made waves, culminating in JOSCON Tasmania taking out the 2025 HIA Australian Start-up Business award. In just two years, the firm grew from a two-person operation to a lean, skilled team of four full-time staff and a network of 118 subcontractors who share the same values of integrity and craftsmanship.
‘We currently average between 10 to 15 builds onsite under various stages of construction and have a significant pre-site pipeline of projects,’ says Scott.
JOSCON Tasmania's Signature Series and Cornerstone Collection of home designs have struck a chord with the Tasmanian market, especially with second- and third-home buyers who want to avoid the complexities and costs of a full custom build.
‘Our homes aren’t designed to save money and squeeze in as many features as possible,’ says Scott. ‘Our designs are well thought-out, creating usable spaces that feel amazing. We don't set out to be the cheapest; we’re aiming to be the highest-quality and most innovative project home builder.’
The company’s state-wide reach runs from Abell’s Bay in the south to Hawley Beach in the north-west. For Scott, one of the most rewarding parts of the job is ‘helping people; however, receiving team recognition is nice too’, he says. That moment came when JOSCON Tasmania won the 2025 HIA Australian Start-up Business award at the HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards in May.
‘For our extended team, who work so hard, it’s incredibly meaningful to be recognised by our peers and the industry,’ says Scott. ‘It really validates everything we’ve been doing.’
